My Six Word Memoir

Probably a month ago now I was tagged by my friend (and practically second sister) Amanda to write my six word memoir known as a meme. Thanks, Amanda for the very thought provoking challenge!

Taken from her blog (that she took from HER friend's blog):

This Meme originated over an idea that was prompted by the book written by Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser Not Quite What I was planning: Six Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure. It's a compilation based on the story that Hemingway once bet $10 that he could sum up his life in six words. His words were- "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn."

Ever since Amanda tagged me, I've really thought about this. I'd find myself thinking about it in the car, at the dinner table, while cleaning the kitchen, and so on. How could I accurately and honestly sum up my life and myself in SIX WORDS?!? It was QUITE a challenge indeed, but it REALLY got me thinking about what REALLY sums me up. It got me to cut through all the extra stuff and just get down to the "meat" of my soul, if you will. A lot of things have been up in the air for me lately which made this even more difficult, but there were a few (and I mean VERY few) things that have remained echoing in my heart.

I've seen that there are three things that have kept me going. Three things that keep me believing that because of Who I serve, ANYTHING is possible.

My Six Word Meme:

Eternally Thankful. Eternally Hopeful. Eternally Blessed.

I pass the same challenge along to YOU that was passed to me. And I leave you with this question....What is YOUR six word memoir?

Can YOU help this dog?

The person I got this from is NOT the kind of person that would make this stuff up. I'm posting this here in hopes that SOMEONE who reads this blog might be able to help. I'm not sure where everyone that reads my blog is from but if ANYONE knows of a way to help this dog find a home, your help would be appreciated. If nothing else, please pray that God intervenes and helps Cookie find a home. Thanks!

approx. 7 YR OLD FEMALE DALMATIAN

Hi. My name is Cookie and I NEED HELP FAST! My new foster mom is visiting from out-of-town and leaves LA at the end of June. If I don't find a new home...I WILL DIE AT THE SHELTER! I've had a really sad life so far. My previous home life wasn't filled with love (I was abused) and then I was abandoned in a house, tied to a pipe and left to starve. When I was finally discovered, severely dehydrated and malnourished, I thought I was saved...turns out that I was locked up in small, dark quarters for months on end as "evidence". I had no hope because the public never saw me. No one goes to the dungeon - except a rare few like Timi. Recently I was scheduled to be killed on June 16th at 5pm but Timi found me a foster home and picked me up instead!! Now I'm in danger because my truly loving foster mom, Kathleen, will be leaving the country due to unavoidable circumstances. At this point it is best if I am an only dog. Timi says that my surroundings (fight ring Pitt Bulls barking non-stop at me) has made me nervous around other dogs but if I can find stable foster care, they are going to socialize me again. I'm sure it won't take long with some diligent assistance. I just have to feel safe again and know that another dog isn't out to harm me. I'll just need some patience and time to re-enter a loving environment. Timi has successfully socialized other dogs, and now they all play at the dog park as if they were everyone's best friend. I look forward to making some canine friends too!! I AM GREAT WITH PEOPLE!! Super sweet. Full of kisses and I appreciate the small stuff. Like a bath, grass and a tree to pee on. Most of all, I would really, really appreciate love. Will you give me a permanent home? I don't ever want to go back to that horrible and scary place again! If they didn't decide to kill me, I would have died anyway. I was so sad and depressed that I stopped eating. I've suffered body and soul, but I believe Timi when she says that I deserve love. I'm holding out for that. I'm holding out for love.

A possible donation (dowry) may assist approved Adoptive parent(s) in getting me settled in.

Eyes on the Prize

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

One year when I was still a youth in my church youth group, we went to Winter Park Colorado on a ski trip. I decided to go simply for the fellowship and to be with my friends. I knew I wouldn't be able to ski. A few days after I signed up to go, my youth minister pulled me aside after Wednesday night Bible study and said asked if I wanted to ski on the ski trip. I kinda chuckled at him and said, "very funny, Clayton." He laughed and then told me that he'd been checking out the resort we were going to and as it turns out, it was one of the top resorts for disabled skiers and that if I wanted, I could definitely ski. Talk about a God Thing! I sat there with my mouth hanging open for a second and said, "Yes, Absolutely!"

A few months later a bus full of youth were headed off to Colorado. As I sat on the bus, I prayed for God to work that week on me and everyone else and to reveal Himself in a different way. I prayed that I would be able to conquer my fear of heights and to really enjoy what is and was quite possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Upon getting to Colorado, God definitely revealed Himself in the amazing beauty of that place! I'd been to Colorado before, but never had I ever seen it like this! Wow...I just had to stand there for a second and take it all in. It was BEAUTIFUL!

On the morning of my first ski lesson, I was a bundle of nervous energy. A mixture of fear, uncertainty, and excitement ran through me. Clayton went with me to meet the people who would be my instructors. I really don't consider myself to be a clingy person, if anything I'm just the opposite but as Clayton gave me a hug and left me for my lesson, I was fighting the urge to beg him to stay. I could only pray he didn't feel me shaking as he released me from the hug and left. I was trying SO hard not to cry, I was scared to death. The only thing that gave me any comfort in that panicked moment was the walkie talkie he had given me. He had one and I had one, if I needed him, all I had to do was get on that and he'd be there. For the first five minutes after he left, I kept my hand in the pocket of my ski coat and gripped that walkie talkie with shaky fingers.

Once my lesson got started, I began to calm down and got much more comfortable. They put me in a boot like ski and had one instructor attached to the boot from behind me and one attached to the front. The one in front would go down the slope and then I skied to him. My first couple of runs were falls, but as I kept trying, I learned that if I kept my eyes focused on the instructor in front of me and didn't take my gaze off of him, I didn't fall and made it to him in a much smoother trip. There were times on the slopes that it was crazy, people were skiing beside me, or the snow was coming down really hard making it difficult to see and I had to mentally and physically block out everything and everyone around me and just focus on the instructor in front of me.

It occurred to me that our walk with God is the same way. If we keep our eyes on Him, we'll get to where He wants us in a much smoother fashion. Sure, the ride will still be bumpy, but if we keep Him the most important thing in our sight and not get distracted by the things that try to rip our gaze from Him, we'll make it. And...If we find ourselves in need of help...Jesus gives us our own walkie talkie straight to Him...Prayer. All we have to do is call out to Him and He'll be there.

It's been YEARS since that ski trip but I still cling to the lessons God taught me up on those slopes even today. Stay focused. Keep your eyes on Him. I promise, He will make the trip worth it!

Believing HE is enough

I'd like to think I'm a patient person. I'd also like to think I've really grown in my relationship with God over the years. When people ask me how I've grown, I'd like to think that I've matured in many areas but often times I'm not the best judge because I'm too close to the situation. I'm also known to be my own worst critic so I'd probably point you in the direction of my former youth minister (I had several throughout my time as a youth, but honestly only keep up with one regularly and so therefore, he'd probably be able to give you an honest answer...He's definitely not one to sugarcoat anything for me, but he tells the truth in love and he's definitely one of the "call at three in the morning" people. He'd be down here if I needed him, and I know that because HE knows I'd NEVER ask unless it was a dire situation.

I say all of that to admit to you here that there have been many times recently I have needed that mirror...that assessment because of one thing or another. I've often felt as though instead of me being the mature Christian, I've often regressed back to baby Christian. God will reveal something to me and it's like, "it's the simplest thing in the world...Basic stuff." I make it tougher than it should be. God's telling me to "Chill" and I'm still trying to figure out HOW in the world all of this is gonna fit together. It's then that the words of my friend Scott Crenshaw come to mind.... "God didn't ask you to understand, He asked you to stand."

I find myself seeing the parallels of this situation to one I found myself in while I was in college. I had just gotten done with this huge math test. It was a big deal because this was my last chance to pass it before I would be unable to register for anymore college courses UNTIL I passed...I studied harder for that test than I think I've ever studied for anything else in my life! My tutor saw me more than my own family and and my social life become non existent for three months.

I was really confident that I had passed when I finished the test but as we ("we" being mainly my tutor and myself) waited the four weeks for my test results to come in, my confidence slowly started to fade. Each day that passed, I deflated a bit more second guessing my work, trying to mentally remember the problems and wracking my brain to figure out if I had carried the one or turned the negative to a positive...I only voiced my concerns once to my tutor as he tried his best to reassure me that I had done fine. I just turned to him one day holding back tears and said, "what if I didn't do enough....." It was out of thin air and we had been talking about something totally different...Thankfully, my tutor had become VERY good at reading between the lines and he knew what was going through my head...He sat down, looked at me for a very long time and said, "You did."

I've found myself asking God that same question now as I wait on Him. And I'm learning that it may not be about us doingEVERYTHING on our own but it's about us doing our best to meet God halfway BELIEVING what we DID do was enough and that God will do what we can't. I find myself wondering, "Did I do enough?" "Did I do too much?" "Did I miss a chance?" "Should I be doing something while I wait" And God is sitting down, looking at us and going, "Stop! I'll reveal it to you if you need to do something else....Be still and KNOW."

I've often wondered HOW and within the last few days the phrase "in vino veritas" has been going through my head at the oddest of times...I'd heard it but had no idea what it meant so after it happened again today I googled it to try and find out what it meant....It's a Latin phrase meaning, "there is truth in wine" I sat there confused trying to figure out WHY that of all things had been floating through my brain so often. Then, the story of Jesus turning water into wine came to my head...And (although I could be way off but this is my best guess) I think that perhaps Jesus was using that phrase as a reminder to me that if He can turn water into wine, He can handle the requests I give Him. HOW can He make my dreams come true?? The same way He turned water into wine.

It's not how much have I done, it's how much do I BELIEVE that God is big enough to handle things and do what I can't and that HE is enough. My job right now: Breathe and Believe.

Oh, and I DID pass that math test!

Kyle's Story

Many of you have heard about baby Kyle Sherrill or at least gotten e-mails from me asking for your prayers on his behalf. Kyle's story touches me on a personal level because of my own story and since I myself was a premature baby. I do not know the family personally, although through keeping up with his story through prayforkyle.com (link is on the right) I do feel as though I have gotten to know them.

And those of you that know me know how important I think it is to share our stories with others whenever the oppurtunity arrises, because you never know how it can help someone else. That is exactly what John and Kelly have done via their blog and now through the hospital's website.

It's Called Faith

I've often told people to "keep the faith...." or to "have faith" I talk an awful lot about it. Only now however, am I beginning to experience what faith REALLY is..."Being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

I'm good with most of that...It's the being CERTAIN of what I CAN'T SEE that I'm having a tough time swallowing right now. Oh, I'm sure...More than sure of what I HOPE for. It's the believing....It's not SEEING any results with my physical eyes, but having to BELIEVE in the unseen. BELIEVE that there is stuff in the works, even if I can't see it yet. It's hard. It's very hard. I'm realizing now just how difficult "having faith" can be when you want something so badly.

I have this mental picture of me on my knees and of God crouched down beside me. He lifts my eyes to His own and with a love and gentleness that only HE has...He's telling me..."I've got you, it's okay, I won't let you fall...I promise. I know it feels at times like a mad free fall, but I promise, you're safe. I've got you. Everything is under control. I hear every prayer, I see how hard you are trying, I know how badly you want this. You don't have to convince me, I know. Stop trying so hard and just trust me. I've got you"

It's a very reassuring picture, and those are words that I really believe God is speaking to me in the midst of everything....When we allow Him, He loves being able to calm us down and renew our faith.

I like to SEE results...I like to SEE things being worked out. I guess so I know things are being taken care of adequately. It's reassuring to SEE the results or to at least take note of the progress.

But, as a Christ follower, I am called to have faith, to believe, to trust, to surrender. Like everything else...Faith is a process. It's not just instantly given to us, but is like a muscle that has to be strengthened.

So, instead of waking up in the mornings begging God that TODAY be the day something happens, I will from here on wake up THANKING God that He allowed doors to open, I will THANK God that none of those doors have been closed yet. I will THANK God that He IS working.

I will THANK God for the dreams He has put within me and will THANK God that He knows the desires of my heart and I will THANK God that He IS at work. I will THANK God that there is ALWAYS hope, there is STILL a chance. I will THANK God that He is a good God, a God that finishes EVERYTHING He starts. I will THANK God that my dreams are in the process of coming true. I will THANK God for the work that is being done behind the scenes. I will THANK God for the unseen.

THIS is called faith

Another Prayer Request

I just added another blog link for Katy's blog in Rwanda. She's with Melissa (see previous "prayer request" a few posts below) and they are both going to be serving in Rwanda for the next seven weeks! Please visit Katy's blog as well and pray for her when you pray for Melissa.

I practically watched Katy grow up...It's amazing to see the young woman she has become with a heart that's on fire for God.

God has two incredible servants in Katy and Melissa. Please continue to pray for them (and their families...parents worry about their kids) and visit their blogs to see what they are up to and what God is doing and to encourage them. I'm sure they'd love to know that so many people back home are praying for them!

The Sound of Music (ipod style)

Recently, a friend of mine took a look at her 25 most played songs on her ipod and said she was surprised by what she found. I thought this was odd since surely, she knew what she listened to most. So, I took a peek at MY 25 most played songs and I see what she meant. *I* was surprised by my own list. Here they are in starting with the one played the most:

1) A World To Believe In- Celine Dion
2) Do You Dream Of Me- Michael W. Smith
3) The Sound of Goodbye- Crystal Gayle
4) Where I Stood- Missy Higgins
5) Apologize (feat. OneRepublic)-Timbaland
6) Ordinary Day-Vanessa Carlton
7) I Will Show You Love-Kendall Payne
8) Slow Me Down -Emmy Rossum
9) Belief-John Mayer
10) Look Away -Chicago
11) Bleeding Love -Leona Lewis
12) Since You've Been Around -Rosie Thomas
13) Breathless -The Corrs
14) Virtuoso -David Phelps
15) That's How You Know -Amy Adams, Enchanted Soundtrack
16) Let Go -Grey Holiday
17) Don't Stop The Music -Rihanna
18) Sometimes He Calms The Storm -Scott Krippayne
19) Whenever, Wherever -Shakira
20) Pocketful of Sunshine -Natasha Bedingfield
21) Happy Working Song -Amy Adams, Enchanted Soundtrack
22) At The Cross -Hillsong
23) Time After Time -Quietdrive
24) Meredith and Derek's Theme -Kara sent me this one, no idea who it's by
25) In A Different Light -Doug Stone

A bit of an odd list if you ask me. I'm not surprised at all that A World to Believe In is number one. I would've been shocked had it not been. I was AMAZED to see only ONE Michael W. Smith song on the list! And thought for sure Sometimes He Calms The Storm would be closer to the top as well as Slow Me Down. Have no idea how Shakira made the list...Must've been going through a phase or something. Pocketful of Sunshine....It was Premiere Week after the strike and this was in all of the Grey's promos and always made me get up and do a happy dance around the room! I'm willing to bet Kate Havnevik's Timeless was number 26 or 27 because I listen to that song all the time! And no Ronnie Milsap, MercyMe, or Reba?? WOW! Interesting list, indeed!
